Dear San Roque members,

With the exception of Thursday and some torrential rain, members enjoyed another fantastic week of fine sunny weather at San Roque with temperatures above 20 degrees for most of the week. We also enjoyed a fantastic Christmas Party at La Finca – thank you to all who attended – it never ceases to amaze me what a great bunch of people the Members of San Roque are!

Last week’s results
On Tuesday, the 20 man roll up was dominated by Wynne Harcombe who carded an exceptional 42 points – clearly a mid-Winter break to Brazil is good for the golf swing! Second place went to Dan Bannister (38pts), third Matthew Charlesworth (37pts) and fourth to Ray Joy (35pts) – well played chaps! Sadly, the Thursday roll up was cancelled due to the heavy rain, but 7 of us hardy souls enjoyed a leisurely breakfast instead!

Sunday’s fine weather resulted in a very enjoyable mixed Texas scramble with 8 teams of 4 hitting the fairways. The winning team carded a net 60 – well played to David & Kay Tyler, Liz Desmond and Ben Amor; a net 62 secured second place for Chris Harris, Stuart Buckwald, Yury & Tanya Pogiba; and a net 63 was good enough for third place (Leni & Toon van Berlo, Norman & Agi Savitz). All twelve received green fee vouchers for Villa Padierna alongside some other goodies form the pro shop!

Forthcoming competitions
On Tuesday 18th December, we have the Annual Staff and Members Day – this is always a very enjoyable day and a Texas scramble will be followed by some light refreshments in the Members Room. On Thursday 20th, we will hold a Charity ‘String’ Day – for those of you not familiar with this type of tournament, Members will be invited to buy a length of string allowing them to move their ball e.g. cut off a small piece to allow your lag par putt to become a birdie or maybe, use some of your string to move the ball away from the wall down the right hand side of the first! After some light-hearted tournaments, it’s back to proper golf with the second monthly medal on Saturday 22nd, followed by a Santa Scramble on Sunday 23rd!! Please put your names down or contact the club to register your place.

Update on financial situation at the Club
There is still no news regarding the appointment of an Administrator but we are using this ‘deadtime’ productively. I am pleased to report that recent discussions with the Town Hall have been positive and we believe that they will be very supportive of our Members Buy Out. Clearly the Town Hall is very concerned about the Club, its employees and is keen to mitigate any negative impact on the area. The Buy Out Business Plan is taking shape and I look forward to sharing this exciting opportunity with you early in the New Year. In the meantime, it is very much business as usual and please ensure that you are all set to pay your 2019 subscription monies on a monthly basis – if you would like to understand the options on how to pay in this manner, please feel free to contact Alicia ( Many thanks in advance for your cooperation!

This maybe my last newsletter before Christmas, in which case I would like to take this opportunity to wish you & your family a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!!

Hope to see you on the course during the week,

Swing it well,

All the best,

Your Captain,
