Dear San Roque members,
I predicted a warm week in my last newsletter and the weather didn’t let us down….temperatures hitting a high of 29 degrees resulted in the soil temperature exceeding 22 degrees, the required temperature for strong growth of grass. The aprons to the greens were looking a little brown and balls bounced a little dead, but the greenness (& bounce) should return in the next 10 days or so.
It was a very busy week at the Club, with a 5 day Spanish Seniors tournament on the New Course – the wind was blowing all week and scoring was tough but a good time was had by all – players reported the course to be in fine condition and I would urge you to get out and have a knock around this much underplayed course.
On a personal note, I enjoyed my annual boys golfing tour last week (thank you to David M for arranging the roll ups on Tuesday & Thursday). We played several courses up the coast & I am delighted to report that the general consensus was that San Roque was in the best condition, had the quickest greens and the most enjoyable all-round experience. Once again, thanks go to Robert and his team!
Warm conditions greeted the golfers who rolled up this week and Sandy Casofsky carded an excellent 38 points to win on Tuesday. Neville Kutner fired in 35 points to take second place from David Tyler (34pts) in third.
In hot & windy playing conditions on Thursday, David Macgregor took the plaudits with a solid 35 points, just pipping John Riley (2nd with 35 pts) and Jeremy Sibbons (3rd with 35 points).
A small but select field for the Monthly Medal on Sunday and a clear winner – congratulations Mekki Abdulla on a fine net 68, well clear of Noel Smith (net 72) and David MacGregor (net 73).
This week we host Samanah Golf Club (Marrakech) for the home leg of our match on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Please note that for those not involved, there will be a mixed roll up at 10.30am on Tuesday 14th May. There will then be the normal roll up on Thursday before the annual Professional’s Day on Saturday 18th May 2019. Mark Emery’s Day is always a very enjoyable one, so please be sure to out your names down for the competition and the lunch afterwards!
Captains Tour to Portugal
Places are filling up for the Captains Tour to Portugal (full details in last two newsletters)….please check your diaries and see if you can make 8-13 September….the more the merrier!!
Now the dust has settled on another terrific US Masters, its probably time to herald one of the game’s greatest – Tiger Woods. Of course, Tiger has been the butt of many a joke ever since he had a blazing row with his wife and crashed his car into a fire hydrant – the police asked Tiger’s wife how many times she hit him…. ‘’I can’t remember’’ Elin said ‘’just put me down for a five.’’
Keep swinging it well!
